Pictures of Prom; Previous and Present
WRIT 2555
I wrote this piece in my Diverse Rhetorics course as a rhetorical analysis of two images, one of me at my Senior Prom, the other of my mother at her senior prom. I discussed how our fashion choices have evolved as well as how the world and the people around us differ greatly. The writing is fairly academic, but the content is personal and I wrote it with creative liberties.

Thanksgiving
ENGL 2010
Every week in my Creative Writing - Fiction class we explored a different aspect of fiction writing. This story corresponds with the module on 'Event', so I placed a character into a family where she hasn't yet come out and fears how her sexuality would be accepted. I incorporated details from the holiday of Thanksgiving to connect internal thoughts of the character back to the external story.

It's Strange to Have Someone Look Up to You
ENGL 1000
This is one of the few creative non-fiction pieces I have in my portfolio as I find it hard to work creatively with reality. I wrote this about a girl I used to work with at a fast food restaurant who had a strong impact on me. I include facts about positive influences in children's lives that related to the stories I was creating.

Your Prom Dress
WRIT 3500
As a part of my Writing Design and Circulation course I chose a finished piece and revised it to cross genres and apply to a different rhetorical situation. With loose inspiration of my piece "Pictures of Prom; Previous and Present" I wrote this poem about my experience with Senior Prom and its connection to my mother and her experience. I made this piece quite personal and addressed it to my mother.

I Drove All Night
ENGL 2010
This piece connects multiple different memories with a common quote. It is very unstructured and somewhat vague, but it represents moments of heartbreak or times of pain. Reading this writing now I would want to restructure it to be a little more readable for the audience.

My Room in Topeka, Kansas - Revised
ENGL 1000/WRIT 3500
In my Intro to Creative Writing course one of our first assignments was to describe our room in detail. I took the course at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, so this piece involves some reflection about being in a new space in such a hurried fashion. In my Writing Design and Circulation course we worked with revising old works and reflecting on why we made certain decisions. On this document there are comments on the right of the page that follow my reflection looking back at the piece two years later.

My Kitchen on Rhode Island St
WRIT 2000
The assignment in my Theories of Writing class was to describe your childhood kitchen. Instead, this work functions as a series of memories I have from my childhood kitchen. I describe aspects of the setting and a few actions that happen during a short period that contribute to the mood of the kitchen. It is more sentimental and includes descriptions of scenes that resonated with me as I grew up.

Another Day
ENGL 2010
The theme of the week when I wrote this in Creative Writing - Fiction was 'Character'. In this piece I develop a character, not through what she says but what she does and how she thinks. The scene takes place on a bus and follows my characters thoughts on her surrounding and life.
